Single Use Medical Devices in SLS

The thermoplastic powder sintering has proven to be particularly effective in meeting very specific requirements of the Medtech sector (biocompatibility and mechanical properties).

Composites Busch SA
Porrentruy, Switzerland

In addition to rapid prototyping for industrial purposes, Composites Busch specializes in the production of medical components based on the principles of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology.

The resistance of the thermoplastic material (polyamide-12) and its biocompatibility mean it is a material that can be used in a wide variety of medical applications, including the manufacture of surgical instruments and other devices.

The usual cleaning and sterilization methods can be applied without causing a change in the mechanical and dimensional characteristics of the components.

The entire production is ISO 13485 validated and certified.

Composites Busch distinguishes itself through medical products with a special finish, aimed at achieving maximum safety for the patient.

The result is that each week cutting guides and other guidance instruments intended for single use are produced by Composites Busch for manufacturers of implants and surgical teams in hospitals.

The cutting guides produced by Composites Busch are anatomical cutting guides, which are custom designed to meet the individual requirements of each patient in order to facilitate and improve specific reconstructive surgical procedures.

The guides adjust to the bone morphology of the patient without the need to use alignment gauges.

Due to the reduced number of instruments and their ease of use, surgery is often much faster, more efficient and more cost effective than comparative surgery using traditional instrumentation or a computer-aided navigation system.

This approach is also of interest to clinical centres because it offers a possibility to reduce the volume of sterilization quite significantly, as well as to manufacturers, who appreciate the simplified logistics management.
